The Langley-Surrey road connection could cost Langley Township $5.6 million, as outlined in a recent engineering report. This project aims to modernize infrastructure and handle increased traffic but faces financial and logistical challenges.
The City of Surrey has upgraded its portion of 24 Avenue between 192 and 196 Streets. This four-lane road includes bike paths and sidewalks, with a Walmart distribution center at 196 Street driving traffic demands. In contrast, Langley’s side of 24 Avenue remains a rural two-lane road with incomplete sidewalks and limited traffic control measures.
Surrey removed concrete barriers at the border and plans to fully open the road, which has accelerated discussions about Langley’s upgrades. Proposed improvements include resurfacing the road, adding sidewalks, and installing a traffic light at 24 Avenue and 200 Street to manage traffic flow. Other recommendations include a crosswalk with flashing beacons at 24 Avenue and 196 Street and raising a section of the road near the Little Campbell River to prevent flooding.
The estimated $5.6 million cost covers immediate upgrades but excludes the eventual expansion to a four-lane road. The Township council’s report recommends revisiting the 2022 design to update cost estimates and scheduling. Initially planned in 2021, the project was paused indefinitely in 2022 when new council priorities shifted funding to other initiatives.
This Langley-Surrey road connection highlights the contrasting development between Langley and Surrey and the financial implications of bridging these differences.
