The iconic “1001 Steps” in South Surrey, a well-loved beach access point near Ocean Park, will be closing next month for a major renovation. After more than 40 years of use, the steps are at the end of their life cycle. Surrey City Council has approved a $700,000 budget for their replacement, funded by the 2024 Parks, Recreation & Culture Capital Budget.
These steps, a gateway to Crescent Beach, offer breathtaking ocean views and are a prime spot for spotting seals and other wildlife. The city assures residents that the new design will enhance safety and accessibility, preserving this local landmark for future generations. Despite the name, the 1001 Steps don’t actually have 1,001 stairs. And there has been no confirmation yet if the new steps will include that number.
Mayor Brenda Locke has highlighted that, in addition to the replacement project, there will be an assessment of traffic impacts, as the area is often crowded. “This renovation will not only enhance the safety and accessibility of the 1001 Steps but will also preserve this beloved community landmark for future generations to enjoy,” Locke said, emphasizing Surrey’s commitment to investing in recreation infrastructure. The city has allocated $1.7 billion for capital projects over the next five years.
Construction is expected to be completed by March 2025. In the meantime, beachgoers will need to take alternative routes to access Crescent Beach. Stay updated on the project by visiting the City of Surrey’s official website. For more information about Crescent Beach, check out Crescent Beach BC.
