Surrey Council Moves Forward with Semiahmoo Town Centre Park Plan

Surrey is set to expand its outdoor recreation spaces. The city council recently approved a new parkland purchase in the Semiahmoo Town Centre. On June 10, the Surrey council voted unanimously to acquire a lot at 15266 21B Ave. This decision marks a significant step towards creating a new park in the neighbourhood.

Strategic Acquisition

The 660.6-square-metre (0.163-acre) lot is the second of ten planned acquisitions. These acquisitions aim to develop a comprehensive outdoor recreation area. The new park will serve surrounding apartment and commercial land uses. This area is in the northeast section of 152 Street and 20 Avenue. Importantly, this move aligns with the Semiahmoo Town Centre Plan, which designates the property as a park/open space.

Enhancing Community Spaces

The decision follows a recommendation by city staff. It reflects a broader commitment to enhancing community spaces in South Surrey. The corporate report highlights that the site is currently zoned for single-family residential use. However, without the park designation, its highest and best use would be as a holding property for future townhouse developments.

Future Developments

As Surrey continues to grow, new parks and recreation spaces are essential. These spaces help maintain the quality of life for residents. The new park in the Semiahmoo Town Centre will provide much-needed green space. This promotes a healthier, more vibrant community.

Next Steps

With the acquisition approved, the next steps involve planning and development. This will transform the lot into a functional and enjoyable park. This initiative is part of a larger effort. Surrey aims to create more public spaces where residents can relax, play, and connect with nature.

Community Impact

The creation of new parkland in South Surrey is about more than just recreation. It fosters a sense of community. It ensures that urban development includes areas for outdoor enjoyment. This move by the Surrey Council shows a commitment to balanced urban planning. They value green spaces as integral to the community’s well-being.

This parkland purchase brings Surrey closer to a well-connected, green, and vibrant Semiahmoo Town Centre. Stay tuned for future updates as this exciting project progresses.
