Efforts to fundraise for a 91-unit inclusive housing project in South Surrey received a significant boost this month. The Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society pledged $100,000 towards the Harmony Apartments project, modeled on UNITI’s Chorus Apartments.
UNITI, comprising Semiahmoo House Society, Peninsula Estates Housing Society, and The Semiahmoo Foundation, expressed deep gratitude for the firefighters’ support. This donation will help ensure affordable and inclusive housing for individuals with developmental disabilities, with rental rates capped at $500 per month.
Dylan Van Rooyen, vice president of the society, remarked on the firefighters’ enthusiasm for supporting such a vital cause. They highlighted their interest in assisting individuals with developmental disabilities.
The Harmony Apartments project, located in the 15100-block of 20 Avenue, received unanimous approval from Surrey council in November 2023. Initially rejected two years prior, the rejection prompted a community-wide awareness campaign, including the release of “Lauren’s Story,” a documentary advocating for inclusive housing.
UNITI‘s success in gaining approval for Harmony Apartments underscores the overwhelming community support for inclusion and equal housing opportunities for people with disabilities.
Expected to commence construction in May, Harmony Apartments represents a $50-million endeavor, with $14.5 million contributed by BC Housing. The Surrey Firefighters Charitable Society’s donation is instrumental in ensuring the success of the capital campaign.
