Surrey-Langley SkyTrain: The $6B Infrastructure Project Transforming Vancouver’s Transit

The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project, a $6 billion infrastructure development, is set to transform public transit in Metro Vancouver. Spanning 16 kilometers, the project will extend the SkyTrain from Surrey to Langley, providing faster and more efficient transportation options for thousands of commuters.

Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project: A Major Infrastructure Development

The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project involves not only the creation of the elevated rail line but also the development of eight new stations, 14 kilometers of bike trails, and pedestrian pathways, promoting active transportation. Additionally, there will be three transit exchanges, nine power propulsion stations, and a 250-meter guideway section at the terminal station in Langley City.

The rail line will run from King George Station in Surrey to Langley City Centre, cutting travel time between the two locations to just 22 minutes. The new stations are designed as transit-oriented development areas, which will encourage sustainable growth around the stations.

Strategic Approach to the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project

Each phase of the project has followed a unique procurement model. The guideway construction will use a design-build-finance approach, the station construction will follow a design-build model, and the systems and trackwork will operate under a target price contract. This strategy has increased competition and attracted top domestic and international companies to bid on different aspects of the project.

Pomerleau CEO Philippe Adam emphasized the importance of this project for British Columbia’s economy, highlighting its long-term impact on local communities and the overall transportation system.

Preparation for the Future

To mitigate project risks, the province has already implemented advance works, such as relocating utility lines and widening roads. These preparatory steps ensure contractors have a clear understanding of site conditions before major construction begins.

Once completed in 2029, the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Project will not only connect Surrey and Langley more efficiently but also enhance the overall public transit system in Metro Vancouver. This infrastructure project is key to the region’s sustainable growth, reducing road congestion and promoting eco-friendly commuting options.
