Egg farming has its own quota mechanics that set it apart from chicken and turkey. If you’re buying or selling a layer operation in BC, these are the questions that matter most.

Layer Quota

Egg quota is administered by the BC Egg Marketing Board. Layer quota generally transfers through BC Egg’s Provincial Quota Exchange, with specific exceptions — the most common being a bona fide going-concern sale of an entire farm operation.

Even in a going-concern transaction, BC Egg determines whether the sale qualifies, and there are current rules around quota that’s surrendered or withheld in those transfers. Quota does not simply run with the land. Any transfer must be applied for by both parties and approved by the applicable marketing board, and it isn’t included in a sale unless expressly stated in the Contract of Purchase and Sale.

Not automatically. The land and the layer quota are treated separately — the quota moves under BC Egg’s rules, not simply by transferring title. Always confirm the quota amount, class, and transfer terms in the Contract of Purchase and Sale. Call 604-928-1361 to review a specific situation.

Buying a Layer Farm

Beyond quota, the big factors are barn type and condition (conventional, enriched, free-run, or free-range — each has different capital and welfare implications), Premises ID and board registration, manure and runoff management, and room to expand. Housing-system trends matter: barns that meet current and near-future welfare standards protect long-term value.
