Turkey Quota

Turkey quota is administered by the BC Turkey Marketing Board. Primary quota may only be transferred on application by both the transferor and transferee, with the Board’s written approval — and the Board can impose conditions or refuse a transfer for several reasons.

Quota does not simply run with the land. Any transfer must be applied for by both parties and approved by the applicable marketing board, and it isn’t included in a sale unless expressly stated in the Contract of Purchase and Sale.

Secondary quota is non-transferable. That’s an important distinction when valuing a turkey operation: only the primary quota can move to a buyer, subject to Board approval. Make sure any purchase clearly identifies which quota is primary and transferable.

Buying a Turkey Farm

One common reason: insufficient production space. The Board can decline a transfer if the buyer doesn’t have adequate room in their Turkey Production Unit to accommodate the production tied to the quota. That makes barn capacity central to whether a deal can even proceed — not just to its price.
