How the Market Works

BC’s supply-managed poultry runs through three separate boards: the BC Chicken Marketing Board (broiler/meat chicken), the BC Turkey Marketing Board, and the BC Egg Marketing Board (layers). Quota is the right to produce a set volume, and it typically carries much of a farm’s value. Quota does not simply run with the land. Any transfer must be applied for by both parties and approved by the applicable marketing board, and it isn’t included in a sale unless expressly stated in the Contract of Purchase and Sale. Each sector has its own mechanism — board approval and premises requirements for chicken, primary vs. secondary quota for turkey, and the Quota Exchange / going-concern route for eggs.
