Broiler Quota

Broiler production is governed by the BC Chicken Marketing Board. Quota can be transferred with registered premises, but both parties must apply and the Board must approve it — and the premises have certification and approval requirements. In practice the Board cancels the seller’s quota and allots quota to the buyer once conditions are met.

Chicken quota can also be transferred separately from the land, again subject to Board approval. Quota does not simply run with the land. Any transfer must be applied for by both parties and approved by the applicable marketing board, and it isn’t included in a sale unless expressly stated in the Contract of Purchase and Sale.

Yes — this is central to broiler deals. The Board will generally only allot transferred quota where it’s satisfied there’s a Board-approved building with adequate premises for production. So barn condition, size, and approval status directly determine whether a transfer can proceed.

Buying a Grower Operation

Look for modern barns with strong ventilation and controls, adequate square footage for the quota, solid biosecurity layout, reliable water and power, efficient feed and manure handling, and room to expand. A genuinely turn-key operation lets a buyer step in and run cycles immediately.
